Novena to Saint Dominic with the nine ways of praying

800e dies natalis_700x900

In this jubilee year of the entry into heaven of our father, Saint Dominic, let us prepare our hearts to celebrate this feast with joy. We suggest that you look at him pray. Blessed Jordan of Saxony said of him: "He was like a fruitful olive tree and like a cypress tree that rises to the heights. He consumed his days and nights tirelessly dedicating himself to prayer.”

Our Father Saint Dominic did not leave any writings, but many friars saw him pray and left shared memories of it, including a manuscript by an unknown author, written in Spanish in 1260-1288: The Nine Ways of Praying of St. Dominic. For this novena, we will use extracts of this booklet, illustrated with beautiful miniatures.

It is not so much a question of imitating St. Dominic in his gestures, but of being inspired by the spirit that animated him, in order to stimulate our fervor and our own way of praying. A way of saying to God: "Here I am!... as I am". In Dominic you will meet a master of interior life! Let us allow ourselves to be led by him on new paths to be born to our true selves, and letting overflowing joy and mission spring forth.

Following each of the ways of praying, a short prayer is formulated to nourish our personal prayer. May you have a beautiful novena! Dominic, teach us to pray!

Each day of the novena will be put online for the indicated date.

July 30 - Day 1 Bowing Prayer
July 31 - Day 2 Prayer of Prostration
August 1 - Day 3 Discipline (the prayer of blood)
August 2 - Day 4 Genuflections (the prayer of the eyes)
August 3 - Day 5 Standing at the Altar (the prayer of the hands)
August 4 - Day 6 Arms extended (the prayer of violence)
August 5 - Day 7 Stretched out like an arrow (the prayer of supplication)
August 6 - Day 8 Studying the Word of God (the prayer of intimacy)

Jubilee Prayer

Dies Natalis Sancti Dominici

O God Our Creator, Redeemer, Paraclete,
In prayer, we lift our praise, our blessing, our preaching.

Eight hundred years ago, you called Saint Dominic
to enter into eternal life, and to join you at table in heaven.

As we celebrate this Jubilee, feed us and fill us with grace
so that we may realize our mission of preaching for the salvation of souls.

Help us nourish your people, with your Truth, your Mercy and your Love,
until the promised day when we are all united with the blessed.

We ask this, as One Dominican Family,
through the pleas of Mary, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
