Genuflections (prayer of the eyes)
Day 4- August 2
Then St. Dominic went to the altar or to the chapter. There, with his gaze fixed on the crucifix, he considered it with incomparable penetration. Before it, he would genuflect many times. Sometimes, too, from compline until the middle of the night, he would rise and then he would kneel... (...) Thus was then formed in our father Saint Dominic a great feeling of confidence in the mercy of God: for himself, for all sinners, and for the preservation of the younger brothers whom he sent out into the world to preach to souls the Gospel (...)
Sometimes he remained in genuflection for a very long time, his soul lost in rapture. And sometimes it seemed that in this kind of look, his intelligence penetrated heaven, and immediately filled with a celestial joy, he wiped the tears that flowed from his eyes. (...) He was so accustomed to bending his knees that, even on journeys, in hostels, after the fatigue of the road and even on the paths, while his companions slept or rested, he returned to his genuflections as a form of his particular art and ministry. And by his example rather than by his words, he taught the brothers this way of praying.
With Dominic who, with his gaze turned towards heaven, felt drawn to God, we implore you, Lord: look at those who seek a presence or a reason to live; let their gaze be turned towards Jesus who is the way, the truth and the life.
Draw our gaze always to you, Jesus. May our gaze remain fixed upon you, you who are fixed on the cross. May you be our anchor, our bulwark, for this is the greatest proof of love we have ever received. You gave your life for us! And as we fix our gaze upon you Lord, we want to be attentive to you... speak Lord, your servants are listening! Open our hearts to the understanding of the will!
We want to kneel before you, because we trust in you. As a sign of humility, dependence, adoration and to receive your blessing. By bowing our knee before you, God, we want to bow our heart. And we trust in you!
Jubilee Prayer
O God Our Creator, Redeemer, Paraclete,
In prayer, we lift our praise, our blessing, our preaching.
Eight hundred years ago, you called Saint Dominic
to enter into eternal life, and to join you at table in heaven.
As we celebrate this Jubilee, feed us and fill us with grace
so that we may realize our mission of preaching for the salvation of souls.
Help us nourish your people, with your Truth, your Mercy and your Love,
until the promised day when we are all united with the blessed.
We ask this, as One Dominican Family,
through the pleas of Mary, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
